The lesson includes a formative assessment, which is used to ensure the lesson is aligned with the Common Core standards. This formative assessment includes 32 questions. These questions are designed as a type of “read-a-thon” assessment, where students are asked to read the text and then answer the questions, which provide immediate and specific feedback to the teacher. The assessment covers all the standards mentioned above, as well as the use of calculators, graphs, and numerical data.
The lesson consists of 15 activities that require students to design and solve linear and non-linear equations, and solve related problems. It also contains numerous extensions and extensions to practice problems that can lead to the students setting up and solving larger and more complex problems. These activities provide much practice in the use of algebraic and graphical representations, modeling with equations and inequalities, linear programming and cost-benefit analysis.
All the problems in the lesson have been specifically created to align with the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Math (English Language Arts - Mathematics - Data and Probability - Language: represent and interpret data, probability and percents; Mathematics - Algebra - Geometry - Data, probability and percentages; Algebra I - Functions, absolute value, linear and quadratic equations; Geometry - Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Figures) and the National Common Core State Standards for Science (Science - Data and Probability; Biology - Systems and functions; Chemistry - Changes of state; Physics - Motion; Environmental Science - Changes in environmental phenomena; Geography - Earth's physical features and processes).
This lesson was created for use in the IntelliPlanet™ online professional development environment. This can be accessed free of charge at www.intelliproject.com. Teachers are encouraged to create their own custom lessons to match the needs of their students.
Using the Student Launch Pad, the teacher can create their own version of the lesson for the unit and provide students access to the online version. This can be done for their own classroom or within their school.
This lesson is designed to help students apply the idea that “work is done in chunks”. They will work in teams to create a “flow” graphic and then use their math skills to determine how they can vary the value of a constraint and identify how they will change the break-even point of the graph to reach a goal profit. They will also be asked to explain their reasoning in a written response.
In this lesson, students will investigate and analyze the data provided in the Real World Data: Students Investigate and Analyze activity. They will use data sets obtained from the MCCD Real World Data Activity to investigate and analyze the relationship between variables.
